Hey Donnie … I hope all is well! Ran across your web site and had to comment on this video.
Lots of reasonable and good points in general are brought up about Independent Baptists — we definitely have our warts and warps. And in several cases, we have much to repent of so we can return to true and radical Christianity.
That said, had to do a small part to set a little bit of the record straight on my alma mater, Bob Jones University (class of 1996). Can’t speak to their treatment of faculty and staff or some of the other accusations… but I do have two points:
1) They have been accreditted since 2005 (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Jones_University) by a reputable organization. Sure, it should have happened sooner. But the leadership in place saw a problem and has corrected it. I think it was a good and necessary move.
2) While some graduates may have found their degrees to be worthless, I’ve found just the opposite. Not only was I able to translate my education into a fruitful career in marketing, I was able to parlay it into an MBA from a very competitive Wake Forest University graduate business program.
I’ll be the last person to tell you BJU is perfect. But it is a good school that provides young people with one of the best (hardly the only, to be sure …), well-rounded educations available in a Christ-centered context.
Good to hear from you Matt.
I have been doing much reevaluation regarding my worldview and my background in the IFB. One of the greatest sticking points with me was my teen years and the IFB church I as in then. It was a hardcore BJU outpost that was so legalistic that you felt like you needed to repent for just being a teenager. I left church at 17 because I could not handle the “you can’t be right with God unless you attend BJU for college.”
Obviously I did not attend BJU but of the friends that did I know of only two that are even still in church. (You make number 3)
There is some commentary on BJU and PCC and the like over at Stuff Fundies Like that I found interesting.

It’s good to hear from you again. Thanks for stopping by.
1) TRACS is not reputable. It’s NATIONAL accreditation, not regional. BJU Grads are having a harder and harder time getting into graduate schools and getting certified. Even Maranatha is capitalizing on this difference:

2) We in our 40s and 50s and even 60s like to run this argument out in a pinch. “Well, *we* didn’t have any trouble, so you shouldn’t either.” Fact is that we did have trouble but we dealt with it. And the fact is that times have changed. Because of diploma mills, certifying agencies and graduate schools are cracking down. It’s changed, and we middle-aged folk can state this with authority anymore.
If I may, while the video was very well done, there were many accusations made in the video, but there doesn’t seem to be any sources provided to back up the claims. Without having any sources, this simply comes across as sour grapes. While I agree that BJU (and PCC) do have many problems, it is important to have actual facts to back up the claims, not just hearsay from “many”.
A friend of mine just this semester tried to transfer her “accredited BJU” hours to the University of North Carolina system… the UNC system of state colleges did not accept any of her “nationally accredited” hours… so basically she lost two years of college. Unless one is going to continue on and work in the fundy system I would not and cannot recommend these unacredited schools.
Thanks for dropping by Jonathan. I agree with your assessment. But using the video format in getting information out in a broad way limits the reference to source material. I take it as a springboard to do further research into what is being said.
I did not attend BoJo but the ones I know who did and were youth leaders and youth pastors were so arrogant, dictatorial and works sanctification entrenched that there was not enough money in the world to pay me to go there. For those who did and feel they got their money’s worth and a good education, and are able to build on that base.. I say great!
Thanks for stopping by.
I personally know BJU graduates who have been accepted into the University of South Carolina (medical school, master’s degree), Clemson (master’s degree and Ph.D), Harvard (law school), University of Kentucky (Ph.D), University of Kansas (Ph.D), and Marshall University (medical school) within the past four years. Not sure how the acceptance processes go at each of these schools. I just know that national accreditation wasn’t a problem for a few people at the aforementioned schools…

The BJU grads I know of who got into top graduate programs got there because of their own skills and intelligence. These are qualities they brought to BJU that enabled them to survive the BJ and thrive in spite of it. I doubt few if any would ever consider sending their own children to BJU.
Bob Jones University credits will not transfer to any community college in the State of Arizona. Just a heads up. The community colleges only accept transfer credit from regionally accredited institutions.
